Sir/Madam,

Sub : Celebration of Animal Welfare Fortnight 2009 - Reg.

On the outset, I wish all of you a very Happy New Year 2009.

The Animal Welfare Fortnight 2009 will be celebrated throughout the country from 14th January 2009 to 31st January 2009. In this regard, I am to inform you that the Animal Welfare Fortnight  2009 should be celebrated in a befitting manner so that the animal welfare issues are highlighted and addressed and more and more people are motivated to join the Animal Welfare Movement.

The following activities are suggested to the AWOs:

a.  Start training for Goshala personnel to utilise full potential of cow dung and urine for production of bio-gas, vermicompost, bio-pesticides, organic soaps, agarbattis and panchgavya medicines towards self sustenance and generate employment.

b.  Arrange Animal Birth Control (ABC)/Anti Rabies (AR) programme in your town for controlling of dog populatin and rabies interact and sponsor the local bodies for support and co-ordination the ABC/AR project for the success.

c.  Rescue animals suffering in your locality. Take them to a Veterinary Doctor.  Announce a campaign called adopt a homeless pet and set the first example by taking a pet (dog/cat) from the streets into your own home. We work in the direction to ensure that there should be no animal to suffer miserably on the streets.

d.  Start your own shelter or goshala on vacant land and get a Veterinary Doctor to treat the animals. You must feed and look after them and try and find them homes.

e.  Make copies of the animal laws pamphlet, translate it into the local language and then give it to the Police and to as many people as you know so that people can start taking action against cruelty. Organise a Police Training Camp on the occasion by getting a police officer and a lawyer to address all the SHOs of the city on the animal protection laws.

f.   If there are any schools having mini zoos advise them to close down as it is illegal to keep animals in schools. Go to the main city zoo with food for the animals. Check on the enclosures, monitor visitor behaviour and try and make this a regular weekly exercise. See if you can find sponsors for individual enclosures who will pay for the improvement and upkeep of the area and in return have their name displayed there.

g.   Give grain and water to the birds. Distribute earthern bowls in various neighbourhoods so that people are encouraged to put out food and water themselves.

h.  Teach people simple vet. first aid. Hold a first aid class and show children what to do when they come across an animal in trouble.

i.   Plant large numbers of bird friendly trees like jamun, neem, shehtoot, bargat, peepal, semal so that birds have something to eat and nest in.

j.   Start an anti-plastic bag campaign and ask people not to throw away edible leftovers tied up in plastic bags as many animals, including cows, eat the plastic bags and die. See if any private company can sponsor small cloth bags which can be distributed free in markets. These should be attractive so that people stop carrying plastics and use only these bags. The company can put its name/logo on these bags so that they serve as a long lasting advertisement emphasising the Company’s commitment to environmental protection and social welfare.

k.  Organise a raid on the illegal wild bird/animal market. Report to the police about the sellers and see that the animal/bird is released back into the wild. Under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 the offender has to be jailed for not less than 5 years and fined. Make small groups that regularly go to markets and see if wild animals or their products are being sold.

l.   There are many horses and donkeys that need medical help. Organise a treatment camp where a majority of the animals operate. Offer food and medicine for the animals. Turn this into a regular weekly or fortnightly exercise.

m.      It is important to ensure that each school be informed about the banning of dissection in the Higher Secondary School level. Obtain pledges from individual schools/students not to participate in dissection. There are alternatives to dissection in the form of Compufrog/Compurat (IBM/PC) : Computer programmes of frog, rat, earthworm, cockroach and pigeon that detail the cardio-pulmonary, digestive, urogenital, nervous, and structural systems. For more details about the alternatives to dissection advise the Principals to  contact AWBI Secretary.

n.  Milkmen misuse “Oxytocin” injections for draining the milk from cattle. It is illegal under the Food and Drug Adultration Prevention Act. Launch an anti-oxytocin drive. Raid dairies and check for evidence such as empty syringes. Announce a boycott of dairies that use “Oxytocin”. Ask the media to cover the issue and publicise stopping use of oxytocin.

o.  First-Aid camps to sick and injured animals on the roadside and various other places can be arranged.

p.  Feeding of stray animals may be arranged.

q.  Arrange visit to slaughter houses in your area and educate the butchers on humane slaughter.

r.  Prevent introduction of children in the slaughter house jobs at very tender age.

s.  Prevent slaughter of one animal in front of other animals awaiting slaughter.

t.   Prevent entry of stray dogs/animals/birds in the premises of slaughter house.

q.  Enrol yourself and your friends to become subscribers to the journals “Animal Citizen”, “Jeev Sarthy” and “AWBI Newsletter” if you have not enrolled, yet.

We do hope that the Celebrations this year will be more colourful and excel the celebrations made in the past.  We request you to please send us reports/photos, news items etc. for our reference and use in our publications.

Looking forward for kind co-operation in reducing cruelties to speechless animals and to spread the message of compassion across the Country.

Yours faithfully,

(D.Rajasekar)

Secretary
